About the museum

The museum was founded in 1896 after the chance discovery of the Baldaria necropolis; its establishment was promoted by the then municipal secretary Cesare Gardellini. The numerous chance finds of Roman and earlier material enriched the collection, until a change of premises became necessary: since 1991 the collections, previously kept in the town hall, have been housed in the former Monte di Pietà building in Piazza Duomo.

The museum holds the archaeological documentation of the left bank of the Adige, from the Neolithic to the Lombard period, in three rooms named after people linked to the town. The room “Anna Rinaldi Gruber” presents material from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age, including finds from the Neolithic village of Santa Giustina di Baldoria and from the Bronze Age settlement of Sabbionara di Veronella. The room “Cesare Gardellini” is devoted to the Iron Age, with the fibulae, ornaments and cinerary urns of the Baldaria necropolis (9th–6th century BC).

The room “Eusebio Checchetti”, named after the person who during the Second World War prevented the looting of the most important pieces, holds Roman and early medieval material, mainly from funerary contexts, with glass grave goods, oil lamps and Roman coins.
