About the museum
The museum was founded in 1897 by the archaeologist Federico Eusebio as a historical-archaeological collection of prehistoric and Roman finds from Alba and the surrounding area. In 1976 it moved to its current premises and expanded with natural science sections devoted to geology and palaeontology, zoology and botany.
The archaeology section also includes materials from excavations carried out over the past thirty years and documents the prehistory and the Roman city of Alba Pompeia. The natural science section holds Messinian fossils, with a reconstruction of a proboscidean excavation, and a herbarium of over eleven thousand specimens. The anthropology section studies ancient human remains found in Alba.
Among the museum's activities are open storerooms, educational initiatives for schools, the concerts of “Musica in Museo” and the videos of the series “Vivere il Museo”. The municipality offers the same admission rates for the two city archaeological sites, “La città invisibile” and the complex of the ancient walls.
