About the museum
The Museo Naturalistico del Roero was set up in the early 1980s in the primary school of Vezza d'Alba, to bring children closer to the study of natural sciences through direct observation of the local environment. Find by find, thanks to the commitment of teachers, collaborators and institutions, a first collection of fossils and small animals was formed. At the end of 1999 the school agreed with the local council to convert the school museum into a civic museum, continuing to manage it.
The museum, conceived as a natural history, tourism and environmental museum, collects only finds from the Roero. It is arranged in four rooms: a wildlife room with dioramas of the area's habitats (damp and dry woodland, rocche (rock outcrops), fishponds, the Tanaro, cultivated fields) and birds beside their nests; a geology room with the Roero strata and their fossils; an entomology room with panels on the life cycles of insects; and an immersive multimedia room.
The multimedia room, created with a project by the GAL (local action group), offers an immersive experience of the territory and a diorama on the truffle; a clay workshop lets visitors experiment with handling Roero soils. The visit lasts from half an hour to two hours.
