About the museum
The Museo Civico del Marmo was founded in 1982 by the municipality of Carrara as a place of historical memory of the city, where the culture of marble is preserved and promoted through the permanent collections, but also through conferences, temporary exhibitions and sculpture symposia.
The route comprises seven sections: Roman archaeology, with finds from the Roman quarries of Carrara and from the areas of Fantiscritti and Gioia, where marble has been quarried since the 1st century BC; the Marmoteca, with around three hundred large samples of marbles, granites and Italian and foreign stones, including a rare marble quarried in the Egyptian desert and used in ancient Rome; the early phases of the modern industry from the 18th to the early 20th century, with machinery and tools for quarrying and working; plaster casts and reproductions of medieval reliefs from the façade of the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea; prototypes for the use of marble in interior furnishing; and twenty-five works of modern sculpture from the Biennali di scultura.
The museum also has a library on marble and local history and a multimedia area with videos on working techniques. The Comune di Carrara and the Chamber of Commerce of Tuscany North-West have launched a large redevelopment project: the works include the external park and a new display, with a renewed route and an expanded collection. The museum is currently closed to the public in view of its reopening.
