About the museum

The museum holds the collection of Enzo “Larry” Vescia, a surgeon who, during his specialist training in the United States, developed a passion for the lands of the American Southwest and the culture of its Native peoples. Friendships with some Native Americans and years of travel gave rise to a collection of about three hundred objects, some of which he restored himself.

The transition from private collection to museum took place in 1989: after Vescia's death his wife, Marie Reine Dupont, donated the collection to the Comune di Cuveglio, linking it to the Valcuvia, where he had spent his childhood and his last years. The museum is housed in the former nursery school of the hamlet of Cavona, on whose building the old inscription “Asilo Infantile” remains; for decades local volunteers from Cavona have worked with the museum. The museum has also received visits from representatives of the descendant communities of the peoples documented.

The route, short and evocative, begins with a painting of Monument Valley and includes the kiva, a round room reproducing the ceremonial space of the Pueblos, with arrowheads, pre-Columbian pottery, Hopi kachina and Navajo rugs; the pioneers' room, devoted to cowboys, sheriffs and saloons; and the study-library, with pottery, footwear, firearms, quilts and rugs.
