About the museum

The civic museum of Campo Ligure is dedicated to filigree, a goldsmith's technique that imitates arabesques with very fine threads of gold or silver, and which in Campo Ligure has a craft tradition that is still alive. In 1884 the master Antonio Oliveri opened a filigree workshop in his native town. His example was followed by other craftsmen, and the workshops came to number as many as 33.

The collection arises from the passion of Pietro Carlo Bosio who, in the 1950s, after ending his work at Ansaldo in Genoa, opened his own workshop in Campo Ligure. Alongside production, he researched and collected fine filigree objects found in flea markets and shops during his trips in Italy and abroad. Together with his wife Stefania Bottero he assembled a large collection, with pieces in which a simple silver thread becomes an ornament or an object of use. Among his works remembered by the museum is a large silver filigree rosary made with the craftsman Matteo Bongera, awarded in Florence in 1967 and donated to the Museo Kennedy in Boston.

The museum is run by the municipality of Campo Ligure and presents the collection in a route that illustrates the history of filigree, from its ancient origins in the Mediterranean and the East to the Ligurian productions of the 19th century. The Centro studi e documentazione (study and documentation centre) collects, studies and disseminates information on ancient and contemporary filigree.
