About the museum

The Civico Museo di Erba, on Via Ugo Foscolo, presents a route organised by chronological and thematic sections on the history of the Erba area. At the entrance, a small group of objects stands for the different sections: the 15th-century Visconti coat of arms, a Roman altar and ammonite fossils from Alpe Turati.

The first two rooms cover the early modern period. Highlights include a 1490 fresco by Andrea De Magistris showing the Madonna del Latte between Saint Roch and Saint Sebastian, from the former Abbey of Sant’Antonio; an original map sheet from the Theresian cadastre; and the wooden pulpit from the parish church of Sant’Eufemia di Incino. The medieval Lombard room holds the most important piece, a Lombard sword with a hilt decorated in silver agemina, from Parravacino d’Erba. The Late Antique and Roman sections display grave goods from tombs in Albavilla, Erba, Tavernerio, Onno, Valbrona and Lasnigo, a marble cinerary urn and three bronze armlets with serpent-head terminals found at Ponte Lambro. The last two rooms house palaeontological finds, including cave bear remains from the Buco del Piombo and ammonites from Alpe Turati.
