About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo degli Anziani, which is also the seat of the Comune, and is Pistoia's first and most important museum institution. The first nucleus of the collections dates back to 1893; the museum was officially established in 1922 with works from charitable and cultural institutions, which in turn had acquired paintings from the religious orders suppressed at the end of the 18th century.
In 1956 donations received made it possible to create an exhibition space also on the top floor of the palazzo; the current display dates from 1982. The route runs across the first and second floors.
On the first floor are the oldest panels, from the 13th to the 16th century, including works attributed to Coppo di Marcovaldo, Lippo di Benivieni, Lorenzo di Credi and Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio. On the second floor are Florentine and Pistoian paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries and the nucleus from the Puccini collection of the Villa di Scornio. On the mezzanine is the Giovanni Michelucci Documentation Centre, with more than 2,000 drawings by the architect.
