About the museum

The museum was founded in 2004 on the initiative of the Province and the Comune of Pistoia and of the Movimento Italiano Casalinghe (MOICA), which manages it. It occupies two rooms on the ground floor of the Palazzo Rospigliosi, a 16th-century building that also houses the Museo diocesano and the Museo Clemente Rospigliosi.

The art of embroidery developed in the Pistoia area from the 17th century, handed down by nuns of enclosed convents, by female colleges and later by workshop schools. Embroidered fabrics were intended mainly for the trousseaux of wealthier families and for ecclesiastical furnishings and vestments.

The first room displays linen, garments and christening gowns from traditional trousseaux, with panels on spinning tools and on the typical stitches (punto antico, sfilato, punto di Casalguidi, punto Pistoia); the second room presents sacred furnishings and vestments embroidered in silk, gold and silver, including an altar frontal of 1601 and an 18th-century set of altar hangings from the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
