About the museum

The civic museum of Viterbo was opened in 1912 and since 1955 has been housed in the former convent attached to the church of Santa Maria della Verità, near the city walls, when the church was reopened for worship. Since 2011 it has borne the name of the Viterbo archaeologist Luigi Rossi Danielli, whose collection is kept on the ground floor.

The entrance is through the Gothic cloister, where Etruscan sarcophagi and a well from the destroyed monastery of Sant’Agostino are displayed. On the ground floor there are also the false ancient inscriptions fabricated by the friar Annio da Viterbo and the sarcophagus of Galiana.

The first floor houses the picture gallery with medieval and early modern paintings and sculptures, while the upper floor is devoted to a gallery of 18th-century portraits and to the history of the city, with 19th-century drawings of the Macchina di Santa Rosa and photo-etched plates of Viterbo. According to the sources consulted, the museum is currently not open to visitors.
