About the museum

The civic museum was established by a resolution of the town council on 8 November 1870 to preserve the city’s antiquities, including mosaics and inscriptions, and was first housed in the Palazzo Municipale. During the 20th century the collections were moved several times, until they found a home in the former Convento degli Alcantarini, a 17th-century building designed by Francesco Antonio Picchiatti, which together with the historic archive and the municipal library now forms the Palazzo della Cultura.

The museum complements the nearby Museo archeologico dell’antica Capua and tells the story of the city from ancient Capua to the present day. Its largest section is devoted to the Risorgimento; there are also rooms with minerals and fossils, antique postcards, ruling dynasties and works by local painters, thanks above all to donations from private individuals and the municipality.

The route also includes the church of San Bonaventura, with Luca Giordano’s painting The Vision of Saint Bonaventure on the high altar.
