About the museum

The Anfiteatro Campano stands in Santa Maria Capua Vetere, on the site of ancient Capua. It was built in the Flavian age, on the model of the Colosseum, between the late 1st and the 2nd century AD; the emperor Hadrian had it restored and decorated, and Antoninus Pius inaugurated it. It could hold up to 60,000 spectators and had extensive underground chambers.

The building was declared a National Monument in 1822 and opened to the public in 1913. In 2013, for its centenary, a ticket office, a bookshop and a restaurant were introduced at the entrance.

Next to the amphitheatre is the Museo dei Gladiatori, dedicated to the gladiatorial school of Capua, founded in 49 BC by Julius Caesar. The ticket to the amphitheatre is also valid for the Anfiteatro repubblicano, the Museo dei Gladiatori, the Museo archeologico nazionale dell’antica Capua and the Mitreo.
