About the museum
The museum is on the ground floor of the Casa del Capitano, in the upper part of the Rocca di Lonato (the Rocchetta), the large fortified complex overlooking the morainic amphitheatre of southern Lake Garda.
The collection derives from the collections of the ornithologist Gustavo Adolfo Carlotto (1886–1970) and comprises around 700 specimens representing almost all the birds found in Italy. The specimens were mounted by the taxidermist Marco Gianese and are in excellent condition.
The Casa del Capitano is run by the Fondazione Ugo Da Como, which also looks after the Rocca and the museum of the Casa del Podestà. The building also houses an immersive room with a touch wall for exploring the museums, sites and specialities of Lonato and the neighbouring municipalities.
