About the museum
The museum in Frascineto was established in 2007 after a study of the Italo-Albanian community and its Byzantine tradition, and is a reference point for Byzantine culture in Calabria. It presents to the public collections of icons dating between the 15th and 20th centuries, from various places in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia.
The display also includes liturgical vestments and furnishings, commemorative medals and texts of the Byzantine liturgy. In 2017 the display was extended and renewed, with modern spaces and multimedia tools that accompany the reading of Byzantine iconography and of its theological and liturgical heritage.
The exhibition project extends across the whole inhabited centre and links the museum with the places of worship of Byzantine tradition in the area. The route, designed by an international group of experts, is organised into introductory and educational sections devoted to the different themes and to the relationship between artistic creation and sacred space.
