About the museum
The Museo Condominiale di Tor Marancia is a “living museum” (museo abitato): its collection consists of 22 monumental murals created by international artists on the façades of a public housing complex built in 1947, where around 120 families live. The idea came from Stefano Antonelli, who designed it in 2013 as a first step towards turning a neighbourhood into a real museum, with a collection, visitors and educational programmes.
The urban education project Big City Life was carried out in just a few months in 2015 by the association 999Contemporary, with the support of Fondazione Roma and Roma Capitale, on the basis of a memorandum of understanding with ATER of the City of Rome. The museum was inaugurated on 9 March 2015 by the mayor of Rome. In 2016 it represented Italy at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in the Italian Pavilion on the theme “Taking Care – Progettare per il bene comune”.
Today the museum is run by the association Museo Condominiale di Tor Marancia, which looks after the works through periodic surveys and condition reports, maintains relations with the artists, runs educational and visitor activities, and keeps an archive of documents on the origins of the project. Its artistic direction is entrusted to Gianluca Marziani.
