About the museum
The collection began in 1968, when Gianni Gini bought a Venetian graphometer that he had noticed in a shop window in Cannes. From that single piece grew a collection of more than 600 nautical instruments, ranging from very old examples to pieces made in the early 20th century.
The museum opened on 21 June 2001 in the ancient tower-house of San Giovanni, in Bellagio, on Lake Como.
Alongside the instruments are logbooks documenting life aboard sailing ships and merchant vessels. A guide to the museum, available in Italian, English and German, leads visitors through the floors of the building and recounts the voyages of the great explorers.
