About the museum

The museum is housed in a twentieth-century industrial building known as “La Piccola”, part of the old railway station built in 1872 and once used as a warehouse for non-perishable goods. Its aim is to preserve the memory of the port city through images, films and testimonies on the twentieth century, social change and the development of the port.

The exhibition includes a model of Porto Torres in the early twentieth century and one of the industrial port from the second half of the century. The windows of the building are shaped like the hull of a ship.

One part of the museum is dedicated to the memorial to the battleship Roma and the ships Vivaldi and Da Noli, which commemorates the about 1,700 sailors who died on 9 September 1943 when the three vessels sank in the Gulf of Asinara. The museum has an educational classroom and offers guided tours.
