About the museum
The domus de janas necropolis of Montalè is located in the locality of the same name, near the hamlet of Li Punti, about 7 km from Sassari. The most important tomb of the complex was discovered by chance in 1982: it is carved into a low limestone bank and is reached through a shaft leading to an antechamber without its original ceiling.
Through the entrance hatch, now closed by an iron grille, you reach a quadrangular central chamber surrounded by seven cells arranged radially, following the scheme known as the “tipo sassarese” (Sassari type). On the walls, frames and pilasters and six bull protomes with crescent-shaped horns are carved in low relief; at the centre of the chamber a slender pillar has a through hole.
The architectural and decorative features allow the tomb to be attributed to the Ozieri culture (around 3300 BC), with probable reuse in the Eneolithic period, attested by the discovery of pottery of the Monte Claro culture (around 2500 BC).
