About the museum
The Museo del Profumo in Milan, opened according to sources in 2004, is a private, self-financed body that describes itself as a cultural centre for the study of vintage perfumery. It aims to present the history and art of twentieth-century perfumery through objects, personalities and the stories of Italian and foreign perfume houses.
The collection brings together about two thousand pieces, including bottles, graphic works, calendars and objects related to the world of perfume. Among the items are creations by glass artists and designers such as René Lalique, Carlo Scarpa, Julien Viard and Fulvio Bianconi, the Le Roy Soleil bottle by Salvador Dalí and Shocking by the Elsa Schiaparelli house, designed by Léonor Fini.
The tours are guided and tell the stories behind the fragrances, from Chanel N°5 to perfumes linked to Gabriele d'Annunzio, and on to the houses Giviemme, Bertelli, Migone and Borsari. The museum also organises meetings, lectures, workshops and training courses, and publishes the magazine Profumeria da Collezione.
