About the museum
The Museo dell’Abbazia di Pedona tells around two thousand years of the history of the place where the abbey of San Dalmazzo stands, a site of devotion for over sixteen centuries, dedicated to the martyr Dalmazzo, a 3rd-century priest who preached in the Maritime Alps. The apses of the Romanesque church overlie the remains of the Lombard building, which are left visible under a glass covering.
Three rooms house finds from the excavations. The first traces the evolution of the church, from the first Christian place of worship to today’s parish church, with a model of the 12th-century abbey church; the second is devoted to the Roman age of Pedona, with grave goods from the necropolis and the cippus of the quadragesima Galliarum; the third presents the marble decorations of the Lombard and Romanesque periods.
An underground route leads from the museum to the apses of the early Christian basilica and the Lombard church, Roman and medieval tombs, and the Romanesque crypt of the 11th and 12th centuries. The visit continues in the Museo Parrocchiale, with reliquaries and sacred vestments of the 17th and 18th centuries, and ends in the upper chapel of the late 17th century, which holds a silver reliquary bust from the late 16th century.
