About the museum
The Accademia di Belle Arti of Perugia, named after Pietro Vannucci, was founded in 1573 by the painter Orazio Alfani and the architect Raffaele Sozi as the Accademia del Disegno, the second in Italy after the Florentine one. Since 1901 it has been housed in the former convent of San Francesco al Prato, next to the oratory of San Bernardino. The collections have grown mainly through works left by academicians and through donations from institutions and private individuals.
The museum, opened in 1974, was closed after the damage caused by the 1997 earthquake and reopened in 2012. Its layout partly follows that of the plaster-cast gallery designed by Gerardo Dottori in 1941. The collections comprise around 600 plaster casts, 430 paintings, 12,000 drawings and 6,300 prints.
The route is divided into three sections: the Gipsoteca, with plaster reproductions of classical and Renaissance masterpieces (including the Laocoön) and original plasters by Antonio Canova, such as The Three Graces; the Gallery of Paintings, with works by Annibale Brugnoli, Armando Spadini, Gerardo Dottori and Alberto Burri; and the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints, with graphic works from the early 17th to the 19th century.
