About the museum
The Collegio della Mercanzia, documented from 1218, was the main guild of the free medieval commune of Perugia: it organised the merchants, set their rules and represented them in the city government. The statutes of 1279 gave it the right to nominate the first two of the ten priors who governed the city. Between the 15th and 17th centuries it became a body of the Perugian nobility, a character it kept until the statute of 1983.
The seat is in the Palazzo dei Priori, on Corso Vannucci, and was assigned to the guild in 1390. Its most important room is the Sala dell’Udienza, a wooden interior of northern late Gothic taste: the panelling is walnut, fir and poplar, partly carved and partly inlaid, and dates from the first half of the 15th century, with some 19th-century alterations. The square panels show Oriental symbols that refer to trade with distant lands.
Benches for the merchants run along the walls; the officials’ seat, to the right of the entrance, has carved Gothic bands and, in the centre, the guild’s griffin on a bale of goods. On the left is the ambo, with coloured wooden reliefs of the four cardinal virtues. A large counter, formerly belonging to the Collegio dei Notai, was bought by the Mercanzia in 1865.
