About the museum
The museum is located in the courtyard in front of the Bishop's Palace, next to the cathedral of Santo Stefano. It opened in 1967 and was expanded over the following years into a true diocesan museum, bringing together works from across the diocese.
The route passes through the Palazzo dei Proposti, overlooks the Romanesque cloister and ends in the “Volte” beneath the cathedral. The rooms display sculptures, paintings, vestments and goldsmiths' work dating from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, as well as an archaeological section.
Among the main works are the Donatello pulpit reliefs and their bronze capital, the altarpiece with the “Funeral of Saint Jerome” by Filippo Lippi, and the Capsella della Sacra Cintola by Maso di Bartolomeo. The ticket also gives access to the whole cathedral complex, including the frescoes by Filippo Lippi.
