About the museum
The Galleria di Palazzo degli Alberti, in the historic centre of Prato, holds the works collected by the former Cassa di Risparmio di Prato, whose building houses the gallery. The collection is now owned by Banca Popolare di Vicenza in compulsory administrative liquidation, and the museum is supported by Intesa Sanpaolo, which funded about three years of restoration work on the gallery spaces, including a dedicated entrance, air conditioning, security and storage. The gallery reopened to the public on 25 March 2022.
The collection comprises 142 works, of which about 90 are on display. The route is chronological and opens with two frescoed tabernacles from the early 15th century. Names represented include Giovanni Bellini, Filippo Lippi, Caravaggio, Bronzino and Puccio di Simone, alongside numerous Florentine paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries and many sculptures by Lorenzo Bartolini, a Prato-born sculptor active in the first half of the 19th century.
The gallery offers guided tours on request, free educational routes for schools and family activities, including the treasure hunt “Chi cerca trova!”.
