About the museum
The museum was created after a Marsican brown bear was found dead, in good condition, in 1995 in the territory of the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. The original site in the historic centre of Gagliano Aterno was damaged by the L’Aquila earthquake of 2009, so the museum was moved to the former convent of Santa Chiara and inaugurated in its new home in 2011.
The route presents the stuffed specimen of the bear, kept in a glass case, a diorama and an educational route devoted to the fauna of the protected area, particularly of Monte Sirente. Information panels illustrate the history, geology, morphology and ecosystem of the territory; some bone remains of wildlife are also on display. The building is used for environmental training and school visits.
