About the museum

The birthplace of Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino, born in Pescina in 1602 and later cardinal and first minister of France, was identified at the end of the 19th century thanks to Monsignor Luigi Colantoni, who placed a plaque on it. The building was completely destroyed by the 1915 earthquake, except for the small external loggia, which remained intact.

In the 1970s, after an appeal by the Abruzzese journalist Giuseppe Buccella, the Italian-French engineer Gervaso Rancilio undertook to restore the house, and an international campaign involving French personalities raised the funds for the reconstruction. In 1972 the cardinal's birthplace was turned into a museum dedicated to his memory; in 1997 the Centro Studi Giulio Raimondo Mazzarino was established.

In the upper part of Pescina, the building houses on the ground floor a library with a reading room and large photographs of Pescina before the earthquake, while the upper hall is the museum proper, with documents on the life and works of the cardinal. The house museum is run by the municipality and also hosts exhibitions and events of contemporary art.
