About the museum
The museum was created by the Arciconfraternita di San Giovanni Decollato, founded in 1488 by Florentine devotees, to preserve evidence of its own activity. The confraternity assisted people condemned to death, among them Beatrice Cenci, whose kneeler is on display but is currently under restoration.
The collection includes bones of executed people set into the floor, ropes used for hangings, baskets for severed heads, registers with the names of the condemned, a stretcher for carrying the bodies to burial, and the garment worn by prisoners on the day of execution. Every year, on 24 June, the bones are blessed in a torchlit procession by members of the confraternity.
The museum occupies the first floor of the confraternity’s building, next to the church of San Giovanni Decollato, in the Rione Ripa.
