About the museum
The Crypta Balbi museum documents the history of a city block in central Rome, reconstructed through archaeological excavation, study of the remains and archive documents. The site is presented as one of the first museums to arise from planned research and contributed to the birth of urban archaeology.
The visit is divided into two parts: the museum, which displays the finds from the excavations, and the archaeological structures visible within the block. It is part of the Museo Nazionale Romano together with the venues Terme di Diocleziano, Palazzo Massimo and Palazzo Altemps.
