About the museum
The museum of the Nobile Contrada dell'Aquila occupies the ground floor of the 16th-century Palazzo Agazzari-Nastasi, on the corner of Casato di Sotto and Costa Larga, about 200 metres from Piazza del Campo. The building has recently been restored and houses the contrada's historical, artistic and sacred heritage.
The route begins in the hall named after Countess Emilia Griccioli Brandolini d'Adda, used for assemblies, and continues in the upper rooms with the historical archive, the chancery and the room where the most recent costumes are kept. The palii won are arranged in reverse chronological order: from the most recent works by Cassinari, Purificato and Dova back to the drappellone of 1719, the oldest original surviving in Siena, displayed in the hall dedicated to Giovanni Antonio Pecci. One room also displays a rare series of fifteen winning jackets (giubbetti) worn by jockeys, dating from 1905 to 1932.
The museum includes the 17th-century Oratorio dei Tredicini, the contrada's church, with paintings by Bernardino Mei, Astolfo Petrazzi and Domenico Manetti. The church and the sacristy, with 17th-century sacred furnishings and goldsmiths' works from the 15th and 16th centuries, were donated to the contrada in 1788 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo. Visitors can also see the underground cells of the Tredicini, carved into tufa.
