About the museum
The MOnd is the museum of the Contrada Capitana dell'Onda, in the Malborghetto district of Siena. Its original core is the Crypt of San Giuseppe, beneath the church built in the 16th century as the oratory of the Arte dei Legnaioli (woodworkers' guild) and owned by the contrada since 1787. The exhibition space later expanded over several levels to include the new rooms of the former Policarpo Bandini kindergarten, the contrada's last major project.
The route uses digital technologies for a “metavisita” (meta-visit) to the past, present and future of the contrada. It is divided into the sections La Storia, Il Rione and L'Acqua. La Storia presents sacred objects, documents, artworks, drappelloni, the plaster cast gallery of Giovanni Duprè, a sculptor from the Onda, and the palii the contrada has won. Il Rione focuses on the most significant places in the district, and L'Acqua on its fountains.
The site houses artworks from the 16th century, and the museum offers a free audio guide via the izi.TRAVEL app and free Wi-Fi inside.
