About the museum
The Museo della Lacrimazione is part of the museums of the Santuario Madonna delle Lacrime di Siracusa, built after the tears shed by a small painting of the Madonna on 29 August 1953. It gathers the objects connected with the event: the cotton wool that wiped away the tears, the pipette and slide used by the medical commission, the wooden cross of the first pilgrimage, the desk on which the official documents were signed, and the silver trowel used to lay the first stone of the Crypt.
Precious gifts made to the little Madonna are also on display, such as the episcopal ring of Mons. Ettore Baranzini and the pectoral cross of Mons. Sebastiano Rosso, as well as numerous ex-votos. One corner is dedicated to the visit of John Paul II to Syracuse for the consecration of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary’s museums also include the Museo degli ex voto, the Museo dei Paramenti e dei Presepi, named after Pope Pius XII, with 18th- and 19th-century vestments and a terracotta nativity scene, and the permanent exhibition on the history of the Madonna delle Lacrime set up in the Crypt.
