About the museum
The idea for the museum arose in the 1990s, on the initiative of Sebastiano and Augusto Aliffi, after most of the old local shipyard was dismantled in the late 1980s; from then on tools and records were collected. Around 2000 the association Syrakosia was founded, the first Museo del Mare opened in 2010, and the organisation SIRMUMA onlus was founded in 2013.
From 2019 to 2022 the museum was located in Via Zummo, in Ortigia, in a former church. In 2023 the finds were moved to the Marina di Siracusa, where the exhibition “Verso il Museo del Mare di Siracusa” was set up.
The collection “Attrezzi dei calafatari” (Caulkers' tools) includes over two hundred tools used to build and repair boats until the 1980s; two boats are also on display. The sections cover caulking and pitch, seafarers, tools, fishing, design and models. The museum offers activities for schools and events.
