About the museum
The museum is located in the Castellaccia, the oldest core of Talla, within the remains of a probable fortified site. The village has always identified this place with the birthplace of Guido Monaco, the Benedictine monk born between 992 and 995 and regarded as the inventor of modern musical notation. The identification rests on fragments of documents, the opinions of scholars and, above all, an ancient local tradition.
According to tradition, Guido received his first education at the nearby abbey of Santa Trinita in Alpe, deepened his spiritual life at Pomposa and around 1025 moved to Arezzo, where he taught music and singing at the episcopal school under Bishop Teodaldo. He is credited with an antiphonary in which the melodies are written on a staff, and with the famous mnemonic device of the “Guidonian hand” with the syllables UT, RE, MI, FA, SOL, LA.
The display is documentary and educational in character: it features musical instruments and interactive and descriptive panels that trace the origins of musical notation. The museum is linked to the Ecomuseo del Casentino, and a route called “Via Musicalis”, with installations (some of them interactive) inspired by the Guidonian hand and by instruments of the past, connects the Castellaccia to the village.
