About the museum

The museum is housed in the Episcopal Palace, opposite the Duomo of Arezzo, which is still the bishop’s residence today. The building was constructed in the 13th century at the wish of Bishop Guglielmino degli Ubertini, the first to live there, and its present appearance is due to a thorough remodeling at the end of the 16th century, with 17th- and 18th-century additions.

Since 2011 the museum has occupied five rooms on the ground floor of the palace and holds sculptures, paintings, illuminated codices, vestments and goldwork from the diocese. The first room contains three rare wooden crucifixes dating from the late 12th to the early 13th century; the second is dedicated to the Annunciation, and the third to the works of Bartolomeo della Gatta, a Camaldolese monk who was active in Arezzo for a long time.

The fourth room is dedicated to Giorgio Vasari, with the processional standard of 1549 made for the Compagnia dei Peducci and the large roundel with the Madonna della Misericordia, and it also preserves the predella of a panel by Luca Signorelli. The last room brings together paintings, wooden sculptures, terracottas and liturgical objects, including the Pace di Siena, a Franco-Flemish goldsmith’s work of the early 15th century. The route also includes, on the piano nobile (main floor), the bishop’s picture gallery (Quadreria vescovile), the palatine chapel frescoed by Teofilo Torri and the Camera dei Papi.
