Museo di Anatomia Umana

About the museum

The Museo di Anatomia Umana is part of MUSA, the Museo Universitario delle Scienze e delle Arti (University Museum of Sciences and Arts) of the Università della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, and is housed in the cloisters of Santa Patrizia in Naples. Its collections go back to the nucleus established in the 17th century by the anatomist Marco Aurelio Severino at the Ospedale San Giacomo. They were enriched in the 18th century by Domenico Cotugno with wax preparations, and in the 19th century by Antonio Nanula.

In 1901 the Gabinetto Anatomico was moved to the former convent of Santa Patrizia. Damage from the Second World War and the 1980 earthquake interrupted its activity. After a long restoration and the reorganisation of around 3,000 objects, the museum reopened to the public in 2015.

The collections include Roman-era surgical instruments and period tools, vascular casts, two life-size wax figures and the “pietrificazioni” (petrifications) of Efisio Marini. The most famous piece is a humerus prepared by Andreas Vesalius in the 16th century.
