About the museum
The museum was founded in 1881 by the anthropologist and ethnologist Giustiniano Nicolucci and belongs to the network of museums of the Università di Napoli Federico II, based in Via Mezzocannone. After the founder’s death, and during the Fascist period, it was closed to the public; the bombings of 1943–44 damaged the university buildings and the collections. Recovery work began after the chair of anthropology was re-established in 1980–81, and the museum reopened to the public in 1994.
The collections document the palaeobiology of the populations of southern Italy and include prehistoric archaeological collections from Europe, western Asia, North Africa and the Americas. Among the best-known holdings are the collection of animal osteology, with remains from the Grotta Romanelli in Puglia dating back 11,000–12,000 years; a mummy of about 700 AD from the Tiwanaku area in Bolivia; and the materials from the donation by Heinrich Schliemann of 1879 from the excavations at Troy.
An ethnographic section holds weapons and everyday objects of various African peoples.
