About the museum
In the 19th century Anticoli Corrado became a destination for painters and intellectuals travelling through the Roman countryside, drawn by the landscape, the architecture and the inhabitants, who were admired as models. From the end of the century artists came to work there for long stays, and the village earned the name “village of artists”, frequented among others by Arturo Martini, Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp; the poet Rafael Alberti stayed there repeatedly from 1963 to 1975.
In the 1920s and 1930s resident artists donated works to the municipality as a sign of gratitude: from those gifts the first nucleus of the collection came into being. The museum was inaugurated in 1935 by the minister Giuseppe Bottai, on the initiative of a promoting committee including Attilio Selva, Orazio Amato, Antonio Muñoz, Pietro Gaudenzi, Riccardo Assanti and Carlo Toppi. Shortly before the opening, Arturo Martini’s fountain was placed in the Piazza delle Ville.
The collection has grown since the First World War and today includes about 700 pieces, among drawings, paintings, sculptures and prints. The museum occupies two floors of a small palace donated to the municipality by Prince Marcantonio Brancaccio, within the old castle transformed into a baronial palace. After more than a year of renovation work it reopened with a new display; the direction is entrusted to Agnese Sferrazza.
