About the museum
The museum was established by the municipality of Vivaro Romano by resolution of the town council of 18 April 2017, to enhance the historical, archaeological and demo-ethno-anthropological heritage of the village. The idea dates back to 2013. Vivaro Romano is the smallest municipality in the Metropolitan City of Rome and for centuries played a role linked to the Papal States and the successive lordships.
The display is housed in a tower of the Castello Borghese, which since the 15th century has dominated the Piana del Cavaliere. On the ground floor a large collection of objects tells of life in the homes, the countryside and the craft workshops of the village over the last two centuries, while illustrated panels trace the local history from the Roman age to today.
On the upper floor are displayed the materials found during the restoration of the castle, and one room recreates the interior of a typical late 19th-century house. The museum has been accredited in the Organizzazione Museale Regionale since 2018 and has been part of the Sistema Museale Medaniene since 2019.
