About the museum
The museum was inaugurated on 16 April 1989 thanks to a group of volunteers passionate about Brescello, the town where the films based on the stories of Giovannino Guareschi were shot. It is now run by the Fondazione “Paese di Don Camillo e Peppone” (Don Camillo and Peppone Town Foundation) and is housed in the Centro Culturale San Benedetto.
The rooms hold original posters, black-and-white photographs and objects from the film sets: Peppone's motorbike, Don Camillo's cassock, the bicycles used in the final scene of the third film, the sidecar, and the projector with which the first film, “Don Camillo” by Julien Duvivier, was shown at the Cinema Verdi in Brescello in its world premiere, in 1952. On the first floor are photographs taken during filming and reconstructions of film settings, such as Peppone's desk.
Outside are displayed the tank from the scene in “Don Camillo e l'onorevole Peppone” (1955) and the train locomotive with which Don Camillo is sent into exile in the mountains at the end of the first film. A bookshop sells souvenirs, books, DVDs and local specialities such as spongata di Brescello (a traditional local cake).
