About the museum
The museum grew out of a collection begun in the early 1970s by volunteers and local history enthusiasts, including Giuseppe Bertini, Alberto Calzolari and Antonio Simeone, with the idea of creating a museum of peasant civilisation in Colorno. The first museum opened on 1 September 1974 in the Aranciaia.
The Aranciaia was built in 1712 as a large greenhouse to shelter citrus trees over the winter and forms part of the complex of the Reggia di Colorno (the ducal palace of Colorno). The museum reopened in April 2014 with a new display and the name Museo dei paesaggi di terra e di fiume (MUPAC); it occupies the first floor of the building.
The ethnographic material includes objects and tools documenting the agricultural and craft activities linked to the Colorno area. The display presents about 212 objects, spread across two of the four sections of the route, devoted to dwelling and to knowledge.
