About the museum
The natural science museum holds the rich 19th-century collection of the Collegio Mellerio Rosmini in Domodossola, gathered over time by the science teachers of the institute. The material includes animals, insects, plants and minerals and is spread across several rooms of the college, covering a total area of 155 square metres.
The first room is devoted to geology and mineralogy. Its highlights include the samples collected by Professor Alessandro Malladra during the excavation of the Simplon Tunnel, a very rich set of rock samples, and other Simplon relics, including the only surviving rock drill.
A second room presents zoology, with a large series of stuffed animals, while the third houses a xylotheque (a collection of woods of different species), herbaria and rare replicas of flowers in Bakelite. The museum is part of the network of the Associazione Musei d'Ossola (Ossola Museums Association).
