About the museum

The museum was founded on the initiative of Francesco Mainieri (1930–2015), a history and philosophy teacher at the liceo classico in Castrovillari, who devised it with the students of Morano, starting from two exhibitions curated in 1977 and 1981. It was first opened in the village primary school; in 2003 it moved to part of Palazzo Salmena in the historic centre, and Mainieri donated it to the Comune of Morano Calabro.

Since 2017 the association “Lo studio di Francesco” has been working on its revival with the MuSAP project, whose motto is “Raccontare. Coinvolgere. Emozionare.” (Tell. Involve. Move.)

The route unfolds over two levels, basement and first floor, in nine sections: territory, countryside, settlements and water; land ownership; production relations and the farming population; work, tools and farming techniques; sheep farming and shepherds; rural building; the interior of the peasant house; rural wool and silk industries; mills and fulling mills. Tools, household utensils, traditional clothing, photographs and documents are on display, together with a typical reconstructed peasant room.
