About the museum
The biomedical section is part of the museum heritage of the Università di Firenze and is housed on the grounds of the Careggi hospital. The collections date largely from 1880 onwards and were first organized in 1936, when the Physiology Laboratory moved to Careggi; the museum opened to the public in 2012 after a long restoration.
The route brings together four core collections: the Laboratory of Human Physiology, with around two hundred 19th-century instruments linked to the institute founded by Maurizio Schiff in 1863; the Museum of Pathological Anatomy, with wax and plaster models of 19th-century cases and registers of 1,469 autopsies from 1839 to 1881; the Museum of Anatomy, founded by Filippo Pacini, with a large collection of skulls and the preparations of Girolamo Segato; and the Museum of Forensic Medicine, moved here from Santa Maria Nuova in 1958.
According to tourist listings the museum is temporarily closed for restoration; in the past visits were free and by appointment.
