About the museum
The Sala del Perugino is the chapter house of the former convent of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi in Florence, known for the fresco of the Crucifixion by Pietro Perugino. The building first belonged to Benedictine nuns, the so-called “converted” or penitent nuns, then to the Cistercians of the Badia a Settimo and finally, from 1628, to the Carmelite nuns of Santa Maria Maddalena de’ Pazzi, who were stripped of the convent by the suppressions of 1866.
The fresco, painted by Perugino between 1493 and 1496 on commission from Dionigi and Giovanna Pucci, depicts the Crucifixion with the Virgin, Saint John, Mary Magdalene and Saints Bernard and Benedict, set in a continuous landscape that extends as if it were an open loggia. The same room also contains a fresco of Saint Bernard receiving the body of Christ, with its sinopia (underdrawing), by Sperandio di Giovanni, a pupil of Perugino, c. 1506.
The room is state property and has been managed since 2014 by the Polo museale della Toscana (Tuscany museum hub) and since 2019 by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali. For a long time it was reached from the church; today it can be visited by arrangement with the Liceo Michelangiolo, with entrance from Via della Colonna.
