About the museum
The museum occupies some rooms of a former convent complex in the centre of Altamura. The building, once home to friars, was used after 1870 as a prison and then as a Carabinieri barracks, before becoming an exhibition venue.
The idea for the museum is due to Pietro Locapo, to whom one section is dedicated. After a long period of neglect the building was reopened in 2010 thanks to regional funding.
The collections illustrate the rural and urban traditions of the Alta Murgia with educational panels and old photographs.
