About the museum

The museum is housed in the square of Gurro, in the heart of the old part of the village, in an old house with a loggia on three floors, and gathers the costumes and traditions of the Valle Cannobina: clothing and lace, toys and pottery, tools for working wool and for making butter. It is part of the Rete Museale dell’Alto Verbano.

The route takes visitors into a house as it once was. In the kitchen there are the cupboard, the storage chest, wooden tableware, the bowl for polenta and milk, the bucket for well water and the floor of piode (slate slabs); in the bedroom there are the wooden bed with headboards and sides, carved cradles, a mattress of beech leaves, the drape with a warp of hand-spun hemp, the quilt and the hemp sheets.

A large room is devoted to trades, with tools and wooden implements for agriculture, livestock farming and crafts. Gurro was famous in the area for its hemp and wool products, so the large loom is displayed with distaffs, spindles, a reel and a spinning wheel, as well as combing tools. In a central display case, mannequins wear the traditional costumes of the valley, which vary from village to village, with skirts, coloured pleated petticoats, shawls, hemp shirts, the characteristic “peduli”, embroidery and lace. Finally, a photo collection of costumes from earlier times can be consulted.
