About the museum
The Museo etnografico Walser di Rimella is located in the hamlet of Sella, in the house known as “ex eredi Vasina”, inhabited until the 1970s. The building, restored in the 2000s and owned by the municipality of Rimella, also houses the Archivio etnolinguistico (ethnolinguistic archive), the Centro di documentazione Walser (Walser documentation centre) and the Centro Studi Walser di Rimella (Walser study centre). The museum was inaugurated on 10 October 2009.
The museum collects, preserves and passes on the distinctive features of the rural life of the Walser culture settled in the upper Val Mastallone, a side valley of the Valsesia. The route is devoted to the relationship between people and the mountain environment and presents the material culture of the agro-silvo-pastoral system that for centuries supported the Walser community of Rimella, with an approach close to ecomuseum themes.
The objects are shown within their production cycles: milling, above all in the hamlet of Grondo; the extraction and laying of piode (stone roofing slabs); the farming cycle with summer pasture and hay-making; work in the woods; food and natural remedies. Oral testimonies help to understand the community's role, for example through the mill of Grondo.
