About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Giovanni Boldini, a painter from Ferrara who in the second half of the 19th century chose the European capitals, London and Paris, to capture the rhythm of modern life, and who became famous as a portraitist of the Belle Époque. The museum's first nucleus was established in 1935 thanks to the bequest of the painter's widow.
It is housed in the Palazzo Massari, built from the late 16th century at the wish of Count Onofrio Bevilacqua, enlarged in the 18th century with the Palazzina Bianca and later owned by the Massari family. Since 1975 it has housed the municipal Modern and Contemporary Art Galleries of Ferrara. Between 1996 and 1998 the Museo dell'Ottocento, the Museo Giovanni Boldini and the Museo d'arte moderna e contemporanea “Filippo de Pisis” were set up there.
The earthquake of May 2012 made the palazzo unfit for use and required the museums to be dismantled. Since then a restoration project has been under way, providing for a new museum layout; in the meantime the collections can be consulted online.
