The exhibition sets the “montagne incantate” painted by Antonioni in the 1970s and 1980s against the early travel photographs of Luigi Ghirri. Curated by Frederic Montornés.
About the museum
The Spazio Antonioni is the museum dedicated to the Ferrara-born film director Michelangelo Antonioni. It opened on 1 June 2024 in an annex of Palazzo Massari, in the former carriage house. From 1976 to 2023 the same spaces housed the Padiglione d’arte contemporanea (Contemporary Art Pavilion). The Comune di Ferrara was looking for a new home for the archive that the director had entrusted to it, after the earlier Museo Michelangelo Antonioni closed in 2006.
The building was renovated to a design by the Rome-based studio Alvisi Kirimoto. It has two floors, each consisting of a large room with movable walls that guide the visit. The museum is built around the director’s archive, which includes films, screenplays, photographs, posters, drawings, paintings, books, records and letters.
The route follows the stages of Antonioni’s career in chronological order and includes four immersive rooms with scenes from his films and a multipurpose space for film series, lectures, workshops and exhibitions. On the upper floor is the section “Le montagne incantate” (The Enchanted Mountains), with small watercolours by the artist enlarged to mountain profiles; the Oscar and Golden Lion statuettes on display are replicas.
