About the museum

The Museo dell’Ottocento, in Palazzo Massari, illustrates the development of the arts in Ferrara in the 19th century with a selection of paintings and sculptures by its most significant artists. The palace, begun in the late 16th century at the wish of Count Onofrio Bevilacqua, has been the seat of the Gallerie d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea of the City of Ferrara since 1975.

The first nucleus of the modern collections reflects the civic and Risorgimento fervour of the pre-unification period, with canvases in the Purist and Romantic style by Gaetano Turchi, Giovanni Pagliarini and others, and the sculpture of Ambrogio Zuffi. After Italian unification, opera shapes historical and literary subjects, as in Giovanni Muzzioli’s The Funeral of Britannicus. In the late 19th century Ferrara’s young talents developed mainly outside the city: Boldini and Alberto Pisa in London and Paris, Previati and Mentessi in Milan. Two substantial holdings in the museum document the personalities of Mentessi, between landscape-as-mood and painting of social protest (Panem nostrum quotidianum), and Previati, a key figure between Divisionism and Symbolism (Assunzione, Paolo and Francesca).

The earthquake of May 2012 made Palazzo Massari unsafe to use. The museum is closed for restoration, with no reopening date given, and the collections can be consulted online.
